What is solution focused hypnotherapy?

Writer: Debs PenriceDebs Penrice

How often do you struggle to focus or finish your to-do list? Maybe you sometimes feel like your mind is working against you? If you’re struggling with stress, anxiety or a lack of focus, it’s worth exploring what you can do differently to improve your situation. Perhaps you also have some trouble sleeping, and the exhaustion is affecting your creativity and motivation. When you’re writing a book or thinking about sharing your story, you can end up putting too much pressure on yourself and not writing. If any of these are happening to you, hypnotherapy is a therapeutic tool which can help you reach a calmer place, where you can be more productive.

What is solution focused hypnotherapy?

When we work in a solution focused way, you'll develop more awareness of what you’d like to change and how you can make small changes to work towards your bigger goals. From neuroscience, we know that our brains don’t like change and new or different things can trigger our fight or flight state, which causes more anxiety. When we work to introduce small changes slowly, we can prepare for those adjustments and invite positive thoughts to support them. Then we can keep our emotional responses and nervous system in check.

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that guides you into a deeply restful state, known as a trance, where your subconscious mind becomes open to positive messages. Despite all the common myths, hypnosis doesn’t mean you lose control. The trance is a state of relaxed awareness where you remain in charge of what you want to do and think. Imagine it’s like a daydream state that helps you access the subconscious parts of your mind that influence your habits, emotions, and behaviours. You know that feeling when you’ve driven somewhere but can’t quite remember the journey because you know the route on auto-pilot? You’re likely to have been drifting in and out of a similar state.

How is hypnotherapy trance different from meditation?

Many people compare hypnotherapy to meditation, but while they share similarities, they serve different purposes. Meditation encourages a sense of peace and mindfulness, helping you observe thoughts without attachment. There is usually a point of focus in a meditation, either the breath, a candle or a guided journey. Hypnotherapy, on the other hand, is more relaxed, where we let the mind drift and brain waves are even slower than in meditation. In a trance state, the word patterns lead you towards feeling more positive and calm, recognising your skills, improving confidence, being flexible or reducing stress. The trance state allows us to work directly with your subconscious, making it easier to shift any limiting belief patterns that may be holding you back.

Which challenges can hypnotherapy help with?

When you’re struggling or you want to make improvements in your life, do find a therapist, coach or well-being practice which suits you. As with anything in life, the more you believe that change is possible, the more likely you are to get there. That’s where trusting your therapist is crucial to the process of healing. When we work together using hypnotherapy, it can address a range of challenges, including:

  • Insomnia and waking - hypnosis helps reduce stress, quietens a busy mind and makes it easier to fall and stay asleep.

  • Stress and anxiety - when you’re juggling a lot of responsibilities, hypnotherapy helps reduce the impact of triggers to your fight-or-flight responses and promotes calm.

  • Procrastination and motivation - when you feel more calm, your logical brain (prefrontal cortex) remains in control. You can overcome unconscious resistance and take consistent action toward your goals.

  • Focus and concentration - a relaxed and positive mind is a more effective mind. You can make decisions, use your intuition more and focus on a better future.

  • Pain management - when you suffer chronic pain, solution focused hypnotherapy can help you stimulate your positive neurotransmitters which reduce the impact of pain.

  • Fears - if you’re facing an irrational fear that limits your life, hypnosis can address the phobia and help you change your responses to the trigger.

  • Lack of self-confidence for public speaking - becoming more relaxed and positive helps you build self-assurance to speak publicly.

  • Irritable bowel symptoms - if you suffer with discomfort and symptoms affecting your digestion, hypnotherapy supports your well-being and reduces them.

What benefits will you feel after your hypnotherapy sessions?

After just a few sessions of hypnotherapy, many clients notice they are feeling more relaxed, focused, and in control of their thoughts and emotions. Some of the benefits you might experience include:

  • Improved sleep, leading to more energy and better productivity.

  • A greater sense of calm, helping you easily cope with daily stress.

  • Enhanced ability to focus on your plan, goals and the actions towards them.

  • A refreshed approach to manage your weight, where you eat and digest more healthily.

  • More creative thinking and activities, as anxiety no longer stifles your ideas.

  • A renewed sense of self-belief to overcome fears and challenges.

Hypnotherapy is a completely natural and safe way to reduce stress, improve focus, and create lasting positive changes in your life. Most clients see those improvements within 6 to 8 sessions, and if you'd like support with your writing, we can continue to work together.
